NOC Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking a capable, service-oriented, and detail-focused NOC Engineer to join our Network Operations Centre supporting an international carrier environment.

This is a remote full-time contract position, offering the opportunity to work from your home base while supporting critical international network operations in a fast-paced and highly technical environment.

This role is ideal for someone who values the flexibility of remote work, is comfortable operating independently with strong accountability, and can communicate clearly and professionally across distributed teams and customers. While this is primarily a remote role, there will be occasional on-site datacentre work required for hands-on tasks such as racking and stacking servers, replacing failed hardware, patching fibre optic and copper connections, and assisting with physical infrastructure activities as needed.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with carrier and enterprise networking technologies, strong customer handling ability, excellent English language proficiency, excellent written and verbal communication, and disciplined operational practices including clear ticketing, documentation, and email hygiene.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor the health, performance, and availability of network infrastructure and customer services on a 24x7 basis.
  • Perform first-line and second-line troubleshooting for network faults, incidents, outages, and service degradation.
  • Investigate and escalate issues relating to routing, switching, firewalling, and customer connectivity.
  • Support operational environments built on technologies including Arista, Juniper, Palo Alto, BGP, VLAN-based services, Grafana, and ELK.
  • Respond to alarms, events, tickets, and customer escalations within defined service levels.
  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and confidently with customers, suppliers, internal engineering teams, and management during incidents and routine operations.
  • Maintain accurate and well-written ticket updates, incident logs, handover notes, knowledge articles, and operational records.
  • Use Jira for ticket tracking, workflow management, and operational coordination.
  • Use Confluence for documentation, runbooks, knowledge sharing, and process updates.
  • Maintain strong email hygiene, including clear subject lines, concise summaries, professional tone, timely follow-up, and accurate stakeholder updates.
  • Carry out routine operational checks, service validation, and follow-up actions to ensure service stability.
  • Assist with incident management, problem management, and escalation coordination during major outages.
  • Support customer provisioning, configuration validation, and service turn-up checks where required.
  • Participate in shift handovers and ensure continuity of operational awareness across the roster.
  • Follow operational procedures, escalation processes, and change control requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering teams to identify recurring issues and improve operational efficiency.
  • Attend the datacentre on an occasional as-needed basis to assist with physical tasks such as racking and stacking servers, replacing hardware, patching fibre optic and copper connections, checking cabling, and supporting basic remote-hands style activities.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Experience in a NOC, ISP, carrier, or service provider environment.
  • Working knowledge of: Arista, Juniper, Palo Alto, BGP, VLANs.
  • Strong working knowledge of Grafana, ELK, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Strong understanding of IP networking, routing, switching, and service troubleshooting principles.
  • Proven ability to manage customer communications and relationships professionally during both routine operations and service incidents.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent English language proficiency is essential.
  • Demonstrated email hygiene, including clear, professional, and accurate written communication.
  • Ability to troubleshoot methodically, prioritise incidents, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Experience working within a 24x7 shift or rostered operational environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and disciplined operational documentation habits.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment, including self-management, responsiveness, and ownership of tasks during shift hours.
  • Willingness and ability to perform occasional on-site datacentre support work when required.

Desirable / Bonus Skills

  • Exposure to OpenStack environments.
  • Experience working with virtual machines and virtualised infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with carrier-grade operational processes, ticketing systems, and monitoring platforms.
  • Basic hands-on familiarity with server hardware, component replacement, fibre optic and copper patching, cabling, and datacentre physical operations.
  • Understanding of firewall policies, customer edge connectivity, and managed service environments.
  • Experience supporting international network services and cross-border customer operations.

What We Offer

  • Remote full-time contract role, allowing you to work from your home base.
  • Opportunity to work in a high-impact international carrier environment.
  • Exposure to a broad range of carrier, network, and customer-facing technologies.
  • A role suited to professionals who value flexibility, autonomy, and operational responsibility.
  • Opportunity to work with globally distributed teams and services.
  • Occasional hands-on exposure to datacentre operations and physical infrastructure work.

Personal Attributes

  • Strong customer service mindset.
  • Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Professional and polished in written correspondence, ticketing, and stakeholder updates.
  • Reliable, responsible, and able to work independently on shift.
